The NEFD in cooperation with 538 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and numerous health care providers, collected 55,195 pounds of prescription medications from the general public.

Statewide smoking ban: Effective July 1, 2004, smoking is banned in all enclosed public places and workplaces, including restaurants and bars. 
The law exempts private clubs when not open to the public, private residences except when used as a business for healthcare or childcare, 
designated hotel/motel smoking rooms, 
retail tobacco stores, 
licensed cigar or hookah bars, 
stage performances involving smoking,
places where smoking-related scientific research is occurring, 
religious ceremonies involving smoking, outdoor areas, 
designated areas in nursing homes as approved by the state, and other tobacco-related workplaces such as farms and distributors. Local governments and boards of health may regulate smoking more strictly than the state.

City eyes tougher public smoking rulesBy Mike LaBella

Stop into a pharmacy to pick up some cold medicine and you might see someone buying a pack of cigarettes.
Go to an event in a private club and people sitting at the next table might be lighting up.
Those scenarios would end if the city's Health Board adopts new public rules proposed for Haverhill. The board is considering regulations aimed at protecting the public from second-hand cigarette smoke by limiting where people can light up.
